Josephine's Favorite Tools

I’m frequently asked about the tools I use to create my work. So I have made a page dedicated to you, who ask. I have linked the sites that to the pages where I personally source them, though some products may be available through multiple distributors. Please note, I don’t receive any financial compensation for sharing these—just passing along the tools I genuinely love and use.

  • Detailing Tape

Auto Body Detailing tape is my most asked about tool. It comes in many different widths for whatever project I have in mind. I use this for creating resist lines or glazing the insides of pots more easily.

  • Set of three metal pin tools for ceramics, ideal for etching, scoring, and fine detailing in pottery and clay sculpting.

    Etching Needle Tools

For my innay and etching, I prefer these different gauge needle tools. They come in a 3 pack; one pintool thickness, the second great for finer lines, and last is the sharpest and acts as an exacto-blade in precision. Each give a great line quality.

  • Needle Tool Protection

You ever been stabbed by a pintool... or just have the fear? Well, traveling with a pintool in a bag to the studio feels like an accident waiting to happen. These are the perfect solution. Like everything Soolla touches they have solved anther potters need with a perfect solution.

  • The Soolla Bag

There is a reason this bag is for potters and has been so widely adored. I love supporting this small business and have one in light green AND another in Sedona Yellow. As a traveling teacher, I bring all my tools in this easily to markets and class.

  • Designer Liner

Made by Mayco this liner is an extra pigmented underglaze that I love using for bold lines over my underglaze designs. There are a couple different colors available through Mayco distributers, my go to is the black liner.

  • Ultimate Trimming Tool

This trimming tool is designed best by Mudtools and has many corners to curl clay away. It took me some getting used to but now I can't trim without it. One of things I love about it is how sharp it stays and how long it will last. Ive had the same one for 3 years now!

  • Wire Tool

A DirtyGirls product I can't go without. I love the gauge of this wire and the flexible loops that won't drag across and destroy my pot like the wooden ones.

  • Bag Ties

Thes are an extra fancy accessory, but an amazing invention by Soolla. I'll preface this favorite with my song dislike for those twisty ties that poke and break after 4 twists (and don't really close your clay bags). These are 100% a better choice.
